A Study of Frenotomy for Treating Ankyloglossia or Tongue-Tie
Post-Procedure Evaluation
- Pre-frenotomy: 6.9 +/- 2.3
- Post-frenotomy: 1.2 +/- 1.5
- P=0.0001
The results of the study indicate breastfeeding improvement and a decrease in pain
following the procedure.
Summary of Results
Summary of Results:
- The incidence of ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants is ~ 3.2 %
- Presenting symptoms are:
- Ineffective latch - younger babies
- Maternal nipple pain - older babies
- Infant latch and maternal pain improve immediately following the procedure
Conclusions
Ankyloglossia accounts for a significant proportion of breastfeeding problems. Hazelbaker?s
lingual assessment tool is useful for evaluating the severity of ankyloglossia and
for selecting appropriate candidates for frenotomy. Frenotomy results in improved
infant latch and decreased maternal nipple pain, thus facilitating breastfeeding
success.
